He Knows Your Name

Scripture to Read: John 20:11-23
Can you imagine how grief stricken Mary must have been? She wept because she did not yet have the confidence that Jesus was resurrected from the dead. She wanted only one thing and that was to find her Lord. Nothing could keep her from Him, so great was her love for Him. She arrives back at the tomb and believes that someone has taken Jesus’ body from the tomb and her aim is to find His body and bring it back to the tomb so that He can have a proper burial. She is so overcome with grief that even the sight of two angels doesn’t phase her. The scriptures don’t say that Mary was frightened or surprised when the angels ask her why she is weeping. She simply answers them, “Because they have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid Him.” Mary’s mind was so full of Jesus that she could think of nothing else. All that she can think about is that her Lord is not there and that she must find Him.
Then something causes her to turn around and there before her is Jesus, but she doesn’t recognize Him. Perhaps it is because her grief is so great, and her eyes were so filled with tears. Or maybe because He was the last person she would expect to see, Mary was looking for a body, not a living, breathing, Jesus. Or it could be because Jesus’ resurrected body looked different. The reasons don’t matter, because the very second that Jesus called Mary’s name she knew it was Him!
Charles Spurgeon said, “Jesus can preach a perfect sermon in one word.” In that one word all was explained, she knew it was the voice of her beloved Messiah. G.H. Trench was quoted in a commentary on this passage saying that, “Jesus didn’t reveal Himself to Mary by telling her who He was, but by telling her who she was to Him.”
One question we might ask of ourselves is, what is keeping me from Jesus? Nothing could keep Mary from Jesus, she was a woman on a mission and she wasn’t going to stop until she found Him. Is your mind and heart so full of Jesus that you can think of nothing else? There are so many things in this world that distract us and can keep us from truly knowing Jesus. We must spend quality time in the Word and prayer with Him in order to know Him. Jesus is calling, and He knows your name.
He Knows My Name by Tommy Walker
I have a Maker
He formed my heart
Before even time began
My life was in His hands
He knows my name
He knows my every thought
He sees each tear that falls
And He hears me when I call
I have a Father
He calls me His own
He’ll never leave me
No matter where I go
He knows my name
He knows my every thought
He sees each tear that falls
And He hears me when I call
He knows your name
He knows your every thought
He sees each tear that falls
And He hears you when you call
