December 17 – Prepare the Way

Isaiah 40:3-4:

‘A voice cries:
“In the wilderness prepare the way of the Lord;
    make straight in the desert a highway for our God.
Every valley shall be lifted up,
    and every mountain and hill be made low;
the uneven ground shall become level,
    and the rough places a plain.

Isaiah prophecies there will be someone who “helps God” by “leveling the field”. This would be strange for the Israelites, because they are used to God’s holy mountain. They are now used to walking UP to the temple, up to where God resides among his people, and yet God is calling out a voice who will level the mountains and raise valleys. No one will be restricted from God because they cannot climb the mountain. Nothing will stop people from being able to come to God.

This strange prophecy talks about removing the restrictions placed before people and God. This is fantastic for his people. God wants to be with us.

We look at His actions in this prophecy and celebrate. We see what God has done with his people and his mercy on them despite their failings. He continues to go above and beyond for his people, and we can take hope. We can’t take hope in the midst of our struggles, because He’s making the path straight and level to Him.

Dear God,

You will make the path straight and level to you. You desire us so much that you will change the world to bring us together. We are so humbled and desire to run the path you have prepared.

In Jesus’ Name,
