December 6 – Virgin Birth

Isaiah 7:14: Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.

Isaiah the prophet is talking with King Ahaz, and helping to reassure him about events that are going on in the world around them. God speaks through Isaiah to say that He is going to intervene. He provides a sign. There will be a child born by an abstinent woman. It is through this woman that Ahaz will receive the sign that what God has said will happen. The big point here is that God’s sign: something that only God can do. Only God can make an abstinent woman pregnant. As this prophecy sees its initial fulfillment in Isaiah 8, it also is a reminder of how God acts. He can do the impossible.

This prophecy receives fulfillment more than once. This foreshadowing allows us to recognize that God uses people despite their situations to do extraordinary things. He presents to His people that He can do the impossible. He can make anything happen.

The name of the son: Immanuel – “God with us”. How reassuring is that. Not only the miracle child being born from God inspired circumstances, but that the child will be a constant reminder that God is with us. This child’s whole life will be defined by events that happened around him, where everyone who looks to him will be reminded of what God has done. What kind of parallel does that make for those who would come?

Dear God,

Thank you for reminding us that you are with us. You intervene in ways we never would have guessed for our benefit. Thank you for your patience with us when we doubt and forget your influence in our lives. Help us to never forget you are always with us.

In Jesus Name,

Carol of the Day:

Nativity Memory Game

Nativity Memory Game

This is the simple game of Memory, where you try to find the matching pictures. In the midst of the simple game, we should recognize that as quick as we are to memorize where the pictures are, we should be as quick to memorize scripture for long term use. As we play a simple game, we should use this as an encouragement to start memorizing scripture. Let’s use today’s verse as a starting point to go forward.
