December 25 – The Fateful Encounter

Luke 2:16-20: And [The Shepherds] went with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby lying in a manger. And when they saw it, they made known the saying that had been told them concerning this child. And all who heard it wondered at what the shepherds told them. But Mary treasured up all these things, pondering them in her heart. And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, as it had been told them.

And at the end of eight days, when he was circumcised, he was called Jesus, the name given by the angel before he was conceived in the womb.

Luke sets the stage for the rest of his book right here. He uses the shepherds to focus in on what Luke sees as essential in his narrative. We see the shepherds experience Jesus for the first time. The Shepherds reaction upon seeing Jesus is to turn to God, giving Him glory and praise as well as telling others about Jesus. This should be our reaction as well. This is something that is echoed throughout the gospels. Upon meeting Jesus, people go out telling everyone everything they experienced.

Mary treasured these experiences. Her reaction is also a good example to follow. We hold on to the memories where we see God at work and can fall back on them during difficult times. These memories can help us to push through the difficult times and remind us to continue to trust God in the middle of them.

Today we remember this moment in history. We remember the birth of our Forever King, our savior, our Lord. Happy Birthday Jesus.

Merry Christmas everyone.

Dear God,

As we prepare to celebrate the birth, we take time to remember. We remember the excitement that we have when we first encounter Jesus and his power in our lives. We embrace it and want to use this time to rekindle that excitement.
